The Surrey Children and Young People Health Related Behaviour Questionnaire 2024

Ruth Hutchinson, Director of Public Health, Surrey County Council and Julia Katherine, Director of Education and Lifelong Learning, Surrey County Council have written a joint letter for headteachers and school leaders, offering them the opportunity to participate in an important, free health and wellbeing survey, targeted at year groups 4, 6, 8, and 10 in Surrey.

The purpose of the survey is to accurately understand the experiences and behaviour of children and young people. This will assist schools in being better able to meet the needs of pupils, through the curriculum and wider school day, and will enable the council's partners with planning relevant and responsive services.

The previous survey (conducted in 2022) provided responses from over 50 Surrey schools. The survey collects data on how young people are feeling, specifically in relation to risk taking behaviours and protective factors, which are associated with wellbeing outcomes. Using this data ensures the views of our children and young people are at the heart of our work with them.

This year's survey will be conducted during late spring/early summer to ensure findings are available to schools to support planning for your PSHE programme for 2024-25, and to inform planning for responsive health services in Surrey. After completing the survey, schools will receive their own individual data set and a comprehensive report comparing their own results to the wider Surrey sample. This allows schools to evaluate if any of their action/interventions is having a positive impact and can also provide evidence for future Ofsted inspections.
